Supervisors Chavez, Ellenberg, Lee, Simitian, and Wasserman:

As voters who live and/or work in Santa Clara County, we ask you to vote against the building of a new jail in the county. A mental health jail is still a jail, and cannot meaningfully respond to mental health needs. The proposed $390 million budget would be better spent providing care, treatment, and preventative programs for individuals with mental health challenges.

As members of the Care First Jails Last campaign led by Silicon Valley De-bug, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action South Bay has spent — and continues to spend — much time and energy fighting to keep people out of cages.

The upcoming vote slated for the January 25, 2022 Board of Supervisors meeting will likely mark a major turning point in this campaign. It is imperative to do all we can to prevent the Supervisors from building a new jail, and to instead use the earmarked $390 million for mental health services.
